The Beginning of Re-Public DAO

The Beginning of Re-Public DAO

The vision of Re-Public is to create digital asset management software for your personal data. A dashboard to visualize all the data that you generate, and then give you the tools to decide what to do with it, from storage, to licensing, to monetization.

This software will be free and open source – and today I'm announcing the creation of Re-Public DAO in order to allow users to own the platform and drive its development.

For now it's just a Twitter account (@republicdao) and this blog. But in the coming months there will be a Discord server and a $PUBLIC governance token. Follow our Twitter account for updates about how and when to join, plus developments on the open-source software that the DAO is meant to drive forward (currently not quite ready to be released).

Later this month the Re-Public mobile app will launch on Android in the Play Store, and then in the iOS App Store soon after. The app will allow you to collect your location data, your device sensor data, and your app usage data (kind of like an ethical Facebook Study). You'll then have the option to share that data in the Re-Public Data Unions and earn tokens for your contributions.

It's very early days for the app, but the vision is to empower users to see money (USD) being added to their bank account within 30 minutes of downloading. And our thesis is that eventually users will passively generate sustainable UBI levels of income from their data.

For now, users will be compensated in Streamr Network's own DATA token. Future versions of the app will allow users to withdraw their DATA tokens as fiat currency through a variety of methods.

Funding and Partnerships

Re-Public is one of the Streamr Data Fund projects, with Swash and Unbanks being two of the more notable alumni. Streamr has been crucial to bringing Re-Public to life and will likely continue to be an integral part of its future going forward.

I also wouldn't be able to launch the Re-Public DAO if it weren't for the folks over at DAOists, so a special thanks to them. If you're interested in DAOs you should definitely join us there as well.

Re-Public is not venture backed and will remain an independent, bootstrapped endeavor. We're in talks with other partners and DAOs as well, so more news to come on that both here and on Twitter.

We're looking forward to everyone joining us on this journey of data liberation.
